Spring Break officially starts on Saturday. If you are fortunate to get some time off, this is a wonderful opportunity to step away from your usual routines and spend some “quality” time with your family. They may not be warmer, but the days are longer. The sun is not shining, but hunkering down or venturing out is still an option. Here are some great family activities for spring break to do.
1. Plan a Family Trip A short road trip to a nearby town can strengthen family bonds and get you off the screens.
2. Explore the Great Outdoors Our local parks are beautiful even in the rain. We have to embrace the temperate rain forest, get outside and enjoy nature. Outdoor activities provide fresh air, exercise, and a chance to unplug from screens, allowing for meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
3. Get Creative at Home If travel isn’t an option, bring the fun home! Plan a family movie night with homemade popcorn, set up a DIY craft station, or try cooking a meal together. Engaging in creative activities fosters teamwork and strengthens connections in an enjoyable way.
4. Have a Staycation Be a tourist in your own city! Visit museums, and local attractions, or try a new restaurant. Check out the suggestions below. Many communities offer special events during Spring Break, such as festivals, concerts, or workshops that the whole family can enjoy.
5. Volunteer Together Giving back as a family is a meaningful way to spend time together. There are many opportunities to volunteer at a local shelter, participate in a neighborhood clean-up, or support a community initiative like the ones from the Captain Scott Legacy Society. Opportunities can be found through Volunteer Connect. Keep in mind that there often is a minium age requirement of 12 or older to volunteer.
6. Unplug and Be Present Spring Break is an ideal time to set aside devices and focus on family. My family is doing a tech detox and eliminating screen time. You don’t have to be that extreme though, just designate tech-free times, such as not before 4pm. Being disconnected will encourage you everyone to enjoy each other’s company.
