The Ultimate Spring Family Fun Weekend: Whistler Childrenโs Festival
As spring unfolds in Whistler, families have the perfect opportunity to create unforgettable memories during the Whistler Childrenโs Festival from May 16-18.

How young is too young to bring your child to a formal cultural event? This is a question I often consider. It really depends on the child. We have been bringing our nine year old daughter to the Vancouver Opera for years and she loves it. We most recently attended a showing of Die Fledermaus. Although the show was partially in German, she found it amusing, entertaining, and was amazed by the talents of the performers.
In a world increasingly driven by technology, where entertainment is often consumed through screens, cultural arts events provide a unique and enriching experience that cannot be replicated in the digital space. Whether itโs a live theater performance show like Cinderella last year at Gateway Theatre or their upcoming showing of Oliver, attending cultural arts events expose children to the worldโs beauty and diversity, enriching their development in ways screens cannot. Hereโs a closer look at why attending cultural arts events with your children is not just enjoyable but also profoundly beneficial.
One of the most important benefits of exposing children to the arts is the impact on their cognitive development. Studies have shown that children who engage with the arts tend to perform better academically and develop critical thinking skills earlier. For instance, a museum visit may spark curiosity about history, science, or geography, prompting children to ask questions and delve deeper into learning.
Theater and storytelling events, in particular, can enhance language and comprehension skills, as children are exposed to new vocabulary and complex narratives. Watching a play or listening to live music also helps kids understand abstract concepts and emotions, making them more attuned to othersโ perspectives and more empathetic individuals overall.
Cultural arts events inspire creativity, showing children that there are many ways to express thoughts, emotions, and ideas. By seeing artists, musicians, dancers, and actors perform, children gain exposure to diverse forms of self-expression. They begin to understand that each individual has a unique voice, and they may feel inspired to explore their own creative interests.
This exposure can lead to increased confidence and self-esteem. When children see performers confidently sharing their art, they learn that creativity is valuable and celebrated. Encouraging them to appreciate or even try their hand at art, dance, or music, for instance, can be a powerful way to nurture their own creativity, which is a skill that will serve them well throughout life.
Brian Cook, a local singer-song-writer performed for a group of children at the New West Family Place and this was how they felt about the live performance.
“Thereโs something truly magical about singing together in a group. It fosters a sense of community and belonging, releasing those feel-good endorphins that brighten our spirits. For children, simple songs with catchy tunes are particularly captivating. They can easily connect with the melodies and rhythms, making music an accessible form of expression that encourages creativity and imagination.”
Attending cultural arts events as a family provides a special opportunity for bonding. In a relaxed, immersive environment, parents and children can enjoy quality time together, away from daily distractions and screen time. These shared experiences create memories that strengthen family connections, fostering an appreciation for spending time together in meaningful ways.
Moreover, discussing the performance, artwork, or music afterward can open up rich conversations, helping parents understand their childrenโs interests, thoughts, and feelings. This communication builds a stronger emotional bond and allows families to connect on deeper, more thoughtful levels.
Cultural arts events offer a window into different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Attending these events helps children learn about the diversity of the world around them and encourages them to value and respect differences. Whether itโs a performance from a dance troupe representing a different culture or an exhibit celebrating an artistโs heritage, children gain valuable insights that expand their worldview.
This exposure helps instill empathy and an appreciation for global diversity. When children are introduced to various cultures in a respectful, positive environment, they are more likely to grow up with an open mind and a welcoming attitude towards people from all backgrounds.
By attending local cultural events, families not only support their community but also help children understand the importance of giving back. This teaches them the value of supporting local artists, musicians, and performers. Attending a local play, concert, or art show shows kids that their participation helps keep the arts alive in their own community. It also builds a sense of pride in their local culture and surroundings, creating a lasting appreciation for the importance of community involvement.
Attending cultural arts events with children is about more than just entertainment; itโs an opportunity for enrichment, bonding, and growth. These events foster creativity, cognitive development, empathy, and appreciation for cultural diversity. Most importantly, sharing these experiences creates cherished family memories that stay with children long after the event itself. So, the next time you see an opportunity to attend a cultural event, consider bringing your children along. Youโll not only share in the joy of discovery but also help shape a well-rounded, culturally aware, and compassionate individual.
