Choosing childcare be whether a daycare or full-day preschool, is a major decision for parents to thoughtfully and thoroughly consider. Whether you’re returning to work, looking for social opportunities for your little one, or preparing for kindergarten readiness, the right environment can make all the difference. With so many options available, the process can feel overwhelming.

While daycare and preschool availability vary by location, having the right resources to thoroughly evaluate options for care in your area, even under time constraints, can help ensure your child is being cared for by trusted, accredited, and reliable providers.

While asking these questions may be difficult, or may limit your options, it is imperative to ensure that informed decisions are being made beyond the availability of care.

Firstly, the decision you make must be based on your needs.

Understand Your Needs

What matters most to your family? Take time to consider the following:

  • What ages can be enrolled? Is it for older children 3+, or do they accept younger children too?
  • Hours of operation โ€“ Do they align with your work schedule?
  • Location โ€“ Is it close to home, work, or a family member who may assist with pickup?
  • Budget โ€“ What can you comfortably afford? Does the childcare or preschool participate in the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative?
  • Type of care โ€“ Are you looking for a home-based daycare, a structured preschool, or a Montessori or Reggio Emilia-style program?

Key questions to ask

A tour is essential. Visiting a center gives you a feel for the environment and how staff interact with children. Ask if you can observe a class and meet with teachers. It’s a red flag, if they want to meet outside of class and won’t let you see the class in action. Here are some additional questions to ask:

  1. What schedule is followed each day? Do the children have a dedicated nap, snack, and learning period?
  2. What qualifications do the staff have? Ensure that the staff are properly trained in early childhood education and first aid/CPR. Make sure there is open, honest, and respectful communication with parents.
  3. How do the staff interact with the children? Are they warm and nurturing with the children? Is there a low turnover? if so, that is a good sign.
  4. What safety and reporting measures are in place? This will help new entrants understand how the daycare/preschool handles injuries, illnesses, or allegations of misconduct.
  5. How are outdoor activities managed? Itโ€™s important to understand how staff approach supervision during outings and the daycareโ€™s transportation policies. Do they get outside every day? Rain or shine?
  6. Is food being offered, and who is handling it? From the producer to the individual(s) handling food and drink at the daycare, inadequate preparation and procedures may pose risks to childrenโ€™s health and safety.
  7. Does the daycare accommodate special needs? Determine whether staff are trained to support children requiring specialized care.
  8. Are they insured and who with? Adequate insurance protection is essential for providers, even to the point of knowing who their insurers are can provide insight to the financial security of the insurance company.

Looking ahead

From staff shortages to affordable care, Canadaโ€™s childcare sector continues to face significant challenges. In this environment, taking a proactive and thoughtful approach is critical to accessing reliable and safe care.

Choosing the right daycare is about more than just availability โ€“ itโ€™s about ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for your child. By evaluating licensing, safety protocols, and quality of care, you can make an informed decision that prioritizes your childโ€™s well-being and development. Asking the right questions and doing your research will not only help you find a daycare that meets your standards but will also give you peace of mind at first drop off, and the many others that follow.
