The Unstoppable “Reset” Mindset
Reset is for anyone who knows the strain of balancing life on the tightrope of being everything to everyone.

Unplugged Canada is a grassroots movement aimed at educating parents about the risks of early smartphone use and inspiring a collective commitment to restoring childhood. To do this, they aim to reduce children’s exposure to smartphones and prioritize their mental health by helping parents make more informed decisions about when to introduce technology into their children’s lives.
The Unplugged Pledge is a promise to refrain from giving children smartphones until they are old enough to handle them responsibly, at least 14 years old. Of course “dumb” phones and smart watches can be used as communication tools.
By signing the pledge, parents join to shift the cultural expectation around smartphones. Instead of viewing early smartphone use as a given, the pledge invites parents to take time and consider the long-term implications of digital exposure for their children. The idea is to create a more thoughtful, intentional approach to technology use in children’s lives, emphasizing that childhood should be a time for exploration, play, and real-life connections, not a time to be consumed by screens.

Research shows that too much exposure to smartphones can impair cognitive development, hinder creativity, and contribute to emotional and social challenges. Children who spend excessive time on screens may:
Creating Real-Life Connections
Real-life experiences of outdoor play, sports, creative arts, and/or community involvement, are critical to a child’s overall development. These activities help children build resilience, strengthen emotional bonds, and learn how to navigate challenges in healthy ways. Being in nature, engaging in physical play, and interacting with friends and peers in-person all contribute to the development of social and emotional intelligence.
Unplugged Canada advocates for a childhood filled with opportunities for creativity and curiosity. By removing the distractions of smartphones, children are free to explore the world around them and develop their own sense of identity. Instead of scrolling through a screen, they can engage with the natural world, interact with others, and pursue their passions.

Parents play a central role in shaping the experiences and future of their children. By signing the Unplugged Pledge, parents commit to protecting their children from the risks of early smartphone exposure. This commitment extends beyond just one family, it is part of a larger movement aimed at creating a culture that values childhood and places greater emphasis on face-to-face connections.
Unplugged Canada encourages communities to come together to share resources, experiences, and ideas. The movement offers support for parents who are taking the pledge, providing educational materials, tips for reducing screen time, and suggestions for fostering healthy digital habits. By creating a network of like-minded families, Unplugged Canada helps to reinforce the idea that prioritizing mental and emotional well-being is a shared goal.
Through research, advocacy, and community initiatives, Unplugged Canada aims to influence policies and practices that promote healthy screentime habits for children. They advocate for broader societal changes, such as more stringent regulations on digital media and stronger protections for children’s mental health.
The organization’s website offers valuable insights, real-world examples, and stories of success to aid parents. With this knowledge, families can make informed decisions about their children’s digital lives, knowing that they are part of a larger movement that prioritizes their children’s long-term well-being.

Unplugged Canada envisions a future where children can grow up without the constant pressure of smartphone culture fostering an environment where curiosity, creativity, and emotional development are nurtured, free from the distractions of addictive algorithms and screen time overload. By committing to this cause, families and communities are creating a foundation for healthier, happier, and more connected generations.
By choosing to unplug, and joining the 410 other schools and 1,784 pledges, families are not just saying no to smartphones, they are saying yes to the richness of real-life experiences, authentic connections, and a childhood that is free to thrive in the world beyond the screen.
Unplugged Canada’s mission is to unplug smart phones, rekindle real-life connections, and guide our children towards a life filled with the warmth of human relationships and the beauty of the natural world. www.unpluggedcanada.com

When I first heard the word clubfoot, I froze. I had never heard of it before. All I knew was that my baby’s tiny feet — the ones I had dreamed of seeing take her first steps — would need treatment, casts, and braces for months, maybe years. I remember holding her close in the…
