Smile Organic Co. is the brainchild of naturopath Delphine Boillot, a former corporate lawyer and mother-of-three who founded the company 6 years ago when she couldn’t find a healthy and nutritious milk alternative for her children. Along the way, Boillot was joined by two other health-conscious mothers: dentist and surgeon Sophie Godbout, who has a son and a daughter, and Katia Pacioretty, a mom to five kids.
The three Montreal-based moms were all too aware of the challenges of parenthood and created the company with the desire to support parents looking for natural and nutritional food choices for their kids. It took 2 years of research and development with a team of nutritionists, paediatricians and biologists to bring their first flagship product to market — a plant-based milk alternative designed to meet the needs of growing kids.
Today, Delphine works hand-in-hand with Health Canada and with Smile Organic Co.’s team of mothers to bring an expanding list of plant-based nutritional products for kids.
“The need for natural and nutrient-rich food for kids is universal,” Delphine says. “Parents’ concerns about their child’s growth and development coupled with an increasing focus on health and wellness has never been higher. We understand the challenges of parenthood and, through our expanded list of products, we are eager to give parents what they want.”
As the visionary behind Smile Organic Co., Delphine is on a mission to bring a range of plant-based food, supplements, and snacks for children made from whole superfoods sourced from the highest-quality ingredients in the world. Parents can have peace of mind knowing that Smile Organic Co. products are free from harmful toxins, additives, and chemicals. All products are rich in calcium and provide a whole range of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy child development. In fact, Smile Organic Co. offers the only non-dairy product of its kind made of 100% whole foods (i.e., nutrients are not synthetic, but are derived from whole foods).
We had a chance to ask Delphine a few more questions.
What nutrient gap are the Smile Organic foods filling?
“There is almost nothing on the market to replace dairy milk. I knew the standards and nutritional values I was looking for. I wanted only whole food ingredients and wanted it to be organic — nothing lab-made or extracted. After 2 years of research, we brought our first flagship product to market — a plant-based milk alternative designed to meet the needs of growing kids from 12 months to 8 years old.
There was nothing plant-based on the Canadian market that could replace cow’s milk in terms of proteins and nutrients until Smile Organic Co. came along.
What are the benefits of drinking Smile vs other non-dairy products?
Parents looking to replace cow’s milk often run into difficulties when choosing a dairy alternative. Check the ingredient list of nut milks such as cashew or almond milk, and you’ll see that these non-dairy drinks are made mostly of water, and they often contain gums and additives. Smile Organic Co. created a clean, nutrient-dense, plant-based milk alternative that replaces cow’s milk proteins, without any of the issues.Â
All Smile Organic Co. foods are naturally allergen-friendly because everything is made from real, wholesome food sourced from the highest-quality ingredients in the world — the proof is in the the product ingredients list, and includes whole foods such as bananas, hemp seed, kale, shiitake mushrooms, organic fermented rice, peas, flax, broccoli, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, sweet potatoes, beetroot, green cabbage, tomato, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, kelp, and chlorella.
You can’t get this type of nutrition from other plant-based milk alternatives. A child will be getting 40 different whole foods in one serving. It’s so important for parents to know their kids are getting proper nutrients that support growth and brain development.
What is the main reason kids like it?
Kids like Smile Organic Co. because it smells good—like vanilla and banana—and the taste is very different from hypoallergenic and regular formulas on the market. It has a naturally pleasant taste. Toddlers can taste real food instead of chemicals, and it is similar to foods they eat or will eat in the future.
Smile Organic products can be purchased at a number of retailers across the Lower Mainland and through their website.
