Many parents know this story all too well: you see your child’s potential, their creativity, curiosity, and clever problem-solving. But school isn’t clicking the way it should. Homework takes longer, reading and writing feels effortful, and confidence starts to fade.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. One in five children has a learning difference and simply learns differently. Fraser Academy, a Grade 2–12 day school in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, specializes in supporting students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Through targeted instruction, small class sizes, and an evidence-based approach, Fraser Academy helps students rediscover confidence and achieve success in learning.

Over 95% of Fraser Academy graduates are accepted into post-secondary programs, going on to study in fields like engineering, creative arts, healthcare, technology, and law.

Targeted Intervention Helping Your Child Thrive

Fraser Academy provides a personalized approach that helps students with learning differences gain confidence, succeed academically and build lifelong skills. Its success stems from its commitment to teaching the curriculum in a way that works for dyslexic learners. The foundation is the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach, a structured, multi-sensory method designed to break down complex language concepts into small, understandable steps.

Fraser Academy also ensures that students have the following benefits:

  • Small Classes (7–12 students): This allows expert educators to provide personalized, engaging instruction tailored to each child’s needs in all subjects.
  • 1:1 (or small group) support from Orton-Gillingham practitioners: Daily (Gr 2-6) or every other day (Gr 7-12) instruction for every student to build foundational skills in reading and/or writing, including fluency, decoding, spelling, vocabulary, composition, and/or comprehension – without pulling your child out from class.
  • Structured, Digestible Lessons: Learning is broken into manageable chunks to support working memory and processing speed.
  • Multi-Sensory, Practical Teaching: Interactive classrooms and hands-on learning help strengthen understanding and confidence, which is particularly well-suited for students with learning differences.
  • Math Remediation: A specialized math remediation team collaborates with faculty to boost numeracy skills using evidence-based, multi-sensory techniques.
  • Technology and AI for Learning: Responsible use of digital tools and AI enhances efficiency and engagement.
  • Executive Function and Thinking Skills: Students are explicitly taught how to study effectively, manage time, self-regulate, think critically, and collaborate.
  • Self-Advocacy and Accommodations: Students learn to understand their unique learning profiles and advocate for the accommodations they need to perform at their best. Every student has an IEP.
  • School Bus Service: For those living outside the central Vancouver core, a school bus service is offered to help families based in North Vancouver, South Surrey and Richmond.

Misconceptions about dyslexia often paint it as a limitation, but Fraser Academy flips this narrative, showing students and families that dyslexia can be a tremendous gift. Students with dyslexia are often creative problem-solvers, big-picture thinkers, and natural innovators. With the right support, these traits can become superpowers in both education and life.
