Being a parent is an incredible experience, but it can also come with its share of stress and anxiety. Regular physical activity is crucial for parents to maintain their overall health and wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety, and set a good example for the next generation.
Finding time for physical activity can be a challenge for parents, between juggling work, household responsibilities, and taking care of children. But prioritizing exercise can help parents feel more energized, focused, and ready to take on the challenges of parenthood.
Here are a few tips for parents to prioritize making time for physical activity:
Prioritize self-care or “me time” – It’s easy for parents to put their own needs on the back burner. There are many responsibilities to take on, and it can be difficult to find the time and energy to prioritize self-care. However, making time for stress relief exercises like walking and strength training can help maintain physical and mental health and reduce stress. Regular physical activity, even if it is just 20 minutes of cardio or weights, can help improve mood.
Supportive environment – For many people, the thought of going back to the gym after becoming a parent can be daunting. Whether due to a long hiatus or simply feeling intimidated by the gym culture, it is common to feel apprehensive about getting back into a fitness routine. Look out for an inclusive environment where you can feel comfortable and confident while working out, no matter what your fitness level or experience is. Planet Fitness, home of the Judgement Free Zone® offers this welcoming environment and is a great place to get back into your fitness routine or kickstart a new one.
Switch it up – Physical activity doesn’t always have to mean running on a treadmill. Sometimes, a change of environment or exercise routine is a good idea. Get creative and find ways to incorporate movement into your daily routine or try a new machine at the gym. This can mean taking the stairs instead of the elevator, trying out free weights or strength equipment, or simply adding stretching to your routine.
Scheduling time for exercise – Making time for exercise requires prioritizing it in your daily schedule. This might mean waking up earlier to fit in a morning workout, scheduling exercise time during your lunch break, or setting aside time in the evening to exercise after your children have gone to bed. By making physical activity a priority, you are more likely to stick to your routine and make it a regular part of your day.
Starting small – Setting realistic goals is important for staying motivated and making exercise part of your routine. This can mean starting with small goals, such as going for a 10-minute walk each day, going to the gym once or twice a week, and gradually increasing the intensity and duration of your workouts. By setting achievable goals, you’re more likely to stay committed to your exercise routine.
