Tell us a little about yourself.
I like to dig deep on things and figure them out from the ground up. Spent my entire life moving and traveling around the world, and now with Hannah, I’m super happy just taking it easy and spending time with the family.
Where is your hometown?
Mount Pleasant, Vancouver, BC
Describe your family
My wife Christina and I are new(ish) parents. Hannah was born in March 2022 and everything changed – perspective, priorities, and what we choose to value in life. This is surely the evolution of any parent, but it’s been astonishing for me to see firsthand how quickly something or someone can profoundly shape your new life. We were brunch people – there wasn’t a spot we hadn’t been to!! Now we’re at the Wonder Room at Science World every Saturday – we couldn’t be happier. Took me 35 years to realize happiness is where you are.
What’s the most challenging part of being a parent?
At first it was the usual suspects – lack of sleep, lack of time, and adjusting to shifting schedules and new priorities. Those issues never really leave you – it’s intuitively obvious to the casual observer. What’s the most challenging thing now – is finding a way to grow our little family. Christina and I both want another – but the realities of doing this in a city like Vancouver make it a little tougher. Ironically having the child is the easy part – we just need to find a rubric that works.
What do you love most about being a parent?
The love that you receive in ways you couldn’t even imagine. It’s like children open up a part of your heart that you didn’t even know you had. Hannah has loads of energy – and we have dance parties almost every night. Hands down, my favorite part of being a parent is the one on one laughs you get out of being hopelessly silly together.
What is the best advice you ever received as a parent?
The best advice I ever got wasn’t actually given to me, it was observed. My friend Dan is the best Dad I know – and I watched him spend time with his son Emmett on a camping trip together in 2021. He was remarkably present to his son – from the littlest trivial details to the larger directions he gave throughout the day – he was attentive, present, and truly listened when they would chat.
I’m pretty busy on a lot of fronts, but I’ve taken that lesson close to heart. Whenever I’m with Hannah, I really make an extra effort to be present to her when we’re together, and thankful for the time we DO have. It’s something that I’m still working on in this age of technological interruption – but it is always on my mind. Phones away!
What is something about you we would find surprising?
I was a Disney fanatic. Still know the words to all the classic Disney movies, and as Hannah grows will get to know more of Moana and Frozen, I’m sure.
What is your go-to family-friendly Lower Mainland activity?
We spend A LOT of time at Science World, but our favorite thing to do is still the various Seawall walks, coffee in hand– catching up with Christina about what’s new at work, laughing about what Hannah did that day, and dreaming of what’s next. If we’re lucky, there’s a craft brewery nearby for a cheeky pint before or after the stroll. We’re very lucky to live in BC and we do our best to take in the majesty of where we live every day.
