INSIDE the Art Gallery, our current exhibition, Erika DeFreitas: close magic, is on until April 25, 2021. DeFreitas is a Scarborough-based artist whose practice includes the use of performance, photography, video, installation, textiles, works on paper, and writing. This is her first solo exhibition in BC and focuses on lens-based artworks. Many of the artworks on display feature her mother, whom she has been working with as a subject for more than a decade. The collection of photographs, video, and works on paper illuminates recurring themes in her practice such as loss, inheritance and finding ways to make the impermanent permanent.  This exhibition is part of the 2021 Capture Photography Festival Selected Exhibition Program

We also have an exhibition Microsite available for visitors/art lovers to learn more about Erika’s art practice that is available while the exhibit is running: www.closemagicatevergreen.ca

However, we also have artwork OUTSIDE the gallery! For any families walking around LaFarge Lake this spring break, we also have an outdoor window exhibition featuring a 17-year-old local and emerging artist Asalah Youssef. Her new series Screenshots of Home (2020) documents people in their homes as they grapple with the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although in-person social interactions have been heavily restricted since the initial lockdown in the spring of 2020, Youssef recognizes that meaningful connections are still possible online, even between strangers. Using the Instagram platform to connect with people from all over the world, Youssef arranged conversations on FaceTime with individuals and families. As they shared their stories, Youssef took screenshots of the participants in their homes, documenting the spectrum of emotions experienced during this time. These works will be up until the first week of June, 2021.

Due to the Provincial Health Order, Evergreen is not hosting in-person events right now, but they are working with local emerging artists to provide online concert videos, recorded live at Evergreen, and shared on their Facebook and YouTube. Check them out here.
