I’m sure everyone is feeling a level of stress with all the news about COV19. It’s hard not to be stuck on your phone or device to follow the updates. And like me, I’m sure you are wondering what to do with your young ones. Luckily, there haven’t been any child fatalities due to the virus, but everyone is making an effort to contain it and that means self-isolation. The word isolation combined with children makes me cringe. We can’t keep kids inside without going stir-crazy, so what can you do?

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Go on an outdoor treasure hunt by geocaching. You will be outside and should be able to keep your distance from crowds. “Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world.” In other words, Geocaching is a treasure hunt! Login to geocaching.com to open your free account and see what people have hidden nearby. You don’t typically take anything with you, but some geocaches are more aimed at children and have a treasure to trade.
  2. Start your Spring gardening. Most parents want their children to get outside away from phones, TV and video games, and gardening is a great way to achieve this goal. However, recent research shows that there are several other reasons to start a garden with kids. The benefits range from making kids smarter to making them healthier.

  3. Bake a treat or sew a project. By tapping into a child’s sense of fun and discovery with shared hands-on activities, the entire family may benefit from quality cooking or crafty time together, while enhancing a healthy, happy home-life. There are also lots of opportunities to add some math and science lessons in. Read more about the importance of cooking and sewing.
  4. Blow some bubbles! Looking for an inexpensive option for some outdoor summer fun? With a little preparation, you can turn bubble blowing into an afternoon of scientific experiments. The Science: Bubbles are fascinating, no matter how old you get! Every soap bubble is a marvel of chemistry and physics. Soap (a surfactant) lowers the surface tension between liquids, allowing bubbles to form. A bubble is composed of three layers – a thin film of water, sandwiched between two layers of surfactant molecules (soap). This unique structure is what makes bubbles beautiful, but delicate! As long as the surface tension isn’t broken, bubbles can survive surprising situations. Get expert tips on how to blow the best bubbles here.

We will continue to search our archives, ask the experts, and come up with some ideas to help keep you busy and make the best of a tough time.

Stay healthy and safe!!!
