Does the thought of long, cold days feeling stuck inside with kids make you shiver? While winter can feel never-ending, it is possible to get outside with your children most days and enjoy it, too! Here are some suggestions to make the most of this winter season.
Make it routine. The most solid way to ensure you are getting out daily is to create a routine. Routine decreases the likelihood of resistance since it’s part of the flow of your day. Consider what time of day that makes the most sense for your family and what times are typically warmest. Once you’ve nailed that down, try to be as consistent as possible. The more often you go, the easier it becomes to get out the door. Of course, check the forecast for extreme temperatures before heading out.
Ensure you have warm gear. When the kids are cold and wet, no one is having a good time. Quality gear doesn’t have to be expensive. Consignment shops and online markets are full of gear to ensure everyone is warm and comfortable outside. Don’t forget to consider your base layers and socks on extra chilly days. There are many resources available online to guide you through dressing your family for the weather.
Have your gear easy to access. So, you’ve got the gear? Great! Avoid having to search for lost items each time by keeping those gloves and toques handy in a bin near your door. This way, kids can easily access them when getting dressed, and can also participate in clean up once you’re back inside!
Start small. Enjoying the outdoors doesn’t require elaborate activities or travel. Start with a simple walk around your neighborhood. Keep children engaged by drawing a simple scavenger hunt before you go out, taking a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy on the go, or searching for signs of animals that live near your home.
Create a warm up tradition. It’s so comforting to come inside knowing you’ll soon be curled up with a tasty hot chocolate or under some blankets reading a great story. These little traditions can be a nice way to warm up, wind down, and have something to look forward to each day.
Have fun! Most of all, enjoy yourself! There are many activities to enjoy that are unique to the winter season. It could be the perfect time to take a skating lesson, or grab your headlamps and flashlights for a walk after dinner. If you’re having fun, chances are the kids will too.

It’s hard to know how to talk to kids about climate change. Children can’t help but be aware of bad climate news, but parents must also provide comfort and hope for their future. There is reason to be hopeful, and reason to be fearful. Most importantly for kids, the loss of plant and animal life…
